Are Whitening Strips Effective?
Are Whitening Strips Effective?
Article
Our teeth are like fingerprints; they are unique to us. As such, it’s impossible for whitening strips to completely be in contact with our teeth surfaces. At best, they cover the front of each tooth; depressions or grooves on the tooth surface and the curves and gaps between teeth usually go untouched. Imagine a Band-Aid spanning the surface of all of your five fingers… the spaces between your fingers get no contact. Therefore, because the whitening ingredients can only contact small areas of the teeth, they can not uniformly bleach the entire set. The result is uneven whitening referred to as ‘striping’. Striping is most evident in the areas between teeth and can actually be quite embarrassing. Furthermore, whitening strips are marketed as ‘one-size-fits-all’ even though it’s obvious that one size does not fit all. Teeth are fairly unique in that each person has a different set in size and structure. Whitening strips that come in a standard size are not the way to go.
